JM Gallery presents the new production by Matías Sánchez, painter born in Germany (Tübingen, 1972) but who lives in Andalusia.
Silly the sheep that confesses to wolf
We are living in a society with a constant bombardment of images. We have become indifferent to others pain and new technologies have invaded all spaces imaginable. In this media context, the artist Matías Sánchez makes us participate in his burlesque and sarcastic representation of daily life, to face up to raw reality. A reality that we connect the popular and mundane by means of works that shows the social chaos with his complete compromise with pictorial language, the basic use of drawing and colour, without resignation to his complicity with graffiti or comic aesthetic, like traditional way to reveal the debility and insecurity of a society in crisis.
The TV, cinema, radio or a vulgar local conversation can be some of the windows which Matías Sánchez looks out like an artist, to explore the mass culture that everybody lives in. No doubt these constitute the inexhaustible vital sources that allow him to appear like a social medium without resignation to his condition of artist painter with intention of showing us his particular vision of human behaviour in our time. Dislocated eyes, villainous and mischievous smiles, fragments of mutilated bodies and suggested objects charged with symbolism (knives, skulls, mirrors, cigarettes, etc.) are generic ingredients in a world broached without exclusions or censorship, from a total formal and expressive liberty.
In these new works, presented with title Silly the sheep that confesses to wolf, stand out a dozen of drawings made with charcoal, of small format, characterized for the domain of gesture and the deformation of figure. In them the artist subverts all poetry, started by him, making useful poetry of desolation, abjection, grotesqueness and the darkest human motivations from a perspective that combines the most delicate ironic with the blackest humour, with pieces characterized for a structural and formal simplification, like in papers of long format The procession goes from inside or The invasion.
Other constant in singular works by Matías Sánchez are the appearance of set phrases and expressions of urban jargon that accentuate the comical and satiric character of works dedicate to comment relevant aspects of contemporary society, like we can appreciate in the piece We are the Spanish artists, a long painting on linen of 400 x 300 cm. where the artists has a joke of the problematic in the contemporary artistic scene.
In spite of his youth, Matías Sánchez, a self-taught man, however, a good knowledgeable of artistic medium’s history where he develops with mastery and dominium of different techniques, he presents an extensive expositive baggage that shows his large creative capacity and his national and international recognition. His works has been exposed in USA (Chicago, Los Angeles), Germany (Berlin, Munich, Cologne), Belgium (Brussels), Canada (Toronto) and in almost all of Spanish (Art Salamanca, ARCO, Art Valencia, etc.). |
