At Gallery JM the spectators will find the exhibition of recent works by Carlos Schwartz (La Laguna, Tenerife, 1966) composed of installations, paintings, drawings and objects. A proposal that emphasizes the ideas of assemblage and three-dimensional and by which the artist tries to unravel the relations between the light that illuminates these objects and the space in which they are placed. Enthusiastic reader of books about symbolism and emblems, alliance of word and thing, of significant and painted object, Carlos Schwartz has developed from the beginnings of his artistic trajectory at the end of the eighties a very personal recovery of the symbolic languages. With the aspiration that the painting opens the doors to us of the coded world of the myths of the western culture, his previous exhibitions, like the one presented in Gallery JM in 2003, were inspired by Faustus, Orfeo, Narcissus, the Bible or the Nature. Working the symbol from its capacity to establish intertextual relations – with the music, the poetry, the architecture or the religion-, the Schwartz’s researches became more conceptual and complex by the incorporation of diverse materials. The use of painted paper, cardboard, photographs, wire, natural elements like the mud and etc. turns into the confrontation of objects and paintings in the exhibit space and the incorporation of arts installations. By the time that it was developed in Germany the exhibition “Light art from artificial light” - that analyzes the references in the more recent contemporary art to the work of artists that in the mid 20th was inspired by the light, the colours and the movement-, since 2005 the vibrant shows of Schwartz have been sprinkled with words written with neon tubes appropriate of the urban space; light bulbs as if they were fruits of plants; fluorescent tubes like force vectors… The light has received special importance in its work like argument and like material, he investigates on the light as symbol and as sign and on some subjects related to the light and the space: the living space, the landscape or the permanence. “More light” improve the line of investigation that Schwartz had initiated in previous exhibitions that reflected about the useless and wasted light. As we previously mentioned, the exhibition at the ZKM|Museum in Karlsruhe showed the influence of the electrification all over the world to different artistic groups - Futurism, Constructivism, Bauhaus, Op art-, the evolution from the illusionary representation of the natural light to the true use of the artificial light and its consolidation as an independent medium: the light art. When Heinrich Hertz discovered in 1889 that the electric waves reproduce exactly like optical waves and have the same speed; he established a real and symbolic relationship between light and electricity. That’s the same Schwartz has understood. At his show spectators will find furniture and objects found in open-air markets from Madrid and Berlin which have luminous elements and electrical equipment assembled. Even though these objects apparently seem to be remainders (More light, 2006, With Christ, 2006), as exhibition pieces they establish a new relation with the domestic and the banal thing. Also, because of the use of electrical light elements, this group of works extends the surrealist idea of object trouvé to investigate, in the context of the show, the relation between light and work through the word (Already, 2006), the space and the daily context (Vector, 2006). Carlos Schwartz lives and works between Spain and Germany, where he currently participates on Umwandlung (Berlin), an exhibition that shows the works by diverse artists that live in such a changeable city as Berlin. Among his latest solo shows we could highlight: Velando la verdad, Cervantes Institute of Morocco, Fez, Tanger, Tetuan, Rabat and Casablanca (2004), Trabajos de Luz, Fucares Gallery, Madrid (2005) and Tras la luz, Fucares Gallery, Almagro, Ciudad Real (2006).
